Chapter 12: David

Afterward, we held each other. I felt the warmth of Emma's body next to mine, protecting her with my arms, caressing her, and keeping her close. I closed my eyes and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When I opened my eyes a few hours later, it was dawn already. Emma was wide awake, staring at me.

"Hey," I drawled sleepily, reaching for her and drawing her close to my heart.

"Hey," she responded with a smile, snuggling closer.

I could feel her heartbeat against my chest, and the rhythmic movement resonated with mine, lulling me with a strong sense of calm. For a moment, everything was right in the world, and it made me want to freeze this moment forever.

"Do you have any plans today?" I whispered, catching an earlobe with my lips and playing with it.

"No, I don't."

"I was thinking we could go to the cinema, grab some popcorn, and maybe visit the park later."

"Hmmm, sounds like a busy day you've got planned for us," she said with a laugh.

"I plan to exhaust you enough for tonight," I responded with a wink, catching her fingers and beginning to suckle them softly.

"I have a better plan," she whispered, eyes wide. "Why don't we just lie in bed and stay in all day."

I laughed.

"Nice try, but that would ruin my plans of wooing you all over again."

"Woo me?" she repeated, surprise etched on her features.

"Yes. Flowers, dates, all the works."

She gasped. A small sound in her throat, barely perceptible, but I caught it all the same.

"David," she began with a new understanding and softness radiating from her eyes. "You don't have to–"

"Shhh," I cut her off with a finger to her lips. "I want to do this, Emma. No one else deserves this more than you. So, please allow me to do it."

There is a quiet delight on her face as she gives a silent nod of acquiescence.

I kissed her fingertips one by one, showering her with kisses. One of my goals in Dallas, when I was looking for Emma, had been to woo her afresh.

If once I had been smitten with her, now I was obsessed. Our bond would be stronger and more permanent this time. I would help Emma see how much I cared for and loved her. I would protect the parts of her soul I admired–her passion, intelligence, and complete devotion to her work. Her kind heart. Her hopeful, tender soul.

I stared at her happy face and felt it again–the crushing, overwhelming feeling of helplessness and total lack of control over my heart. With my fortune, after we were married, Emma would never need to work again. But looking at her eyes, I knew she would never settle for that in a million years. Now, I know that she had dreams and childhood ambitions. Strange that in our time together six months ago, I never asked her. But then, during our affair between the office and home, we'd rarely managed to spend much time out of bed or away from each other arms.
